I Climb the Trees

Sittin' on the dock
With my feet in the ocean
All tied up with this small town commotion
I understand what it feels like
Sittin'  in the same spot
Watchin'  your hair turn
From red-brown to gray

I climb the trees everyday
Looking for something
Like air or stars up there
I climb the trees everyday
Just looking for somethin'

There are reason they don't fly,  Just like me
Questions aren't always whys
Reason doesn't roll in with the sea
Your eyes they look nice but I wonder
How they'd look wide open
Or how it looks to you
From your same small view
Just red-brown and gray

I climb the trees everyday
Looking for something
Like air or stars up there
I climb the trees everyday
Just looking for somethin'

Sittin'' on the dock with my
Attention somewhere else
Waiting for the tide to roll in
And save me from this...Well

I thought I'd understand what it feels like
To stand where you both stood
Trying best as I could
To see red-brown from gray

I climb the trees everyday
Looking for something
Like air or stars up there
I climb the trees everyday
Just looking for somethin'

Likeness to Castles

Is that your interpretation of a castle
Defended well as you know
Or is it handsome starvation
Of what your heart has always known

Let me relinquish all you got to give
Let's make one sacrifice, yea you did

Is that your interpretation of life
Breathing best as you can
Pretty posing with a cigarette
Yea, I understand

Well, Let me remind you of what it is to be
Let's make a sacrifice, just you and me

Is that your interpretation of a tree
Standing tall as you can
Dropping seeds of life everywhere
Like it was the palm of your hand
Let me remind you, of what it is to give
Pretty posing, standing in your castle
That ain't no way to live

Is that your interpretation of a castle
Defended well as you know
Or is it handsome starvation
Of what your heart has always known

Let me relinquish all it is to give
Let's make one sacrifice, yes you did

The Ohio

Oh there's beast of the field
There's flocks and there's herds
Crying children and some voices
But most voices are unheard
There are passionless kisses
Birds in the trees
If there's one thing that can save me
From you and that's me

When I touch you I can't see you
When I see you I'm not real
These currents run so deep
Our rainmaking is so real
I will weave inside your heart
Take you down just one more time
All the things I should remember
Oh, thank God you're not mine

But please go careful and slow
I'm going down the Ohio
I'm going down the Ohio
Careful and slow

I'm longing for those rapids
The sticks and the bones
And I'm watching close for signs
Like those scorpions and unknowns
I can feel you in my heart
Breathe with you through my skin
Moving slowly all around you
So I can feel this way again

There are things that will sting
There are things that do burn
There are times in my life
Oh you think I would have learned
Sometimes emptiness can crowd you
Sometimes hearts just don't bleed
But there's one thing I can tell you
You run straight through me

But please go careful and slow
I'm going down the Ohio
I'm going down the Ohio
Careful and slow

Kisses Aren't Promises

Kisses aren't promises, passion's not relief
All these things I see
Kisses they're not promises
No, love's not for sale
All these things are just as well

Have I been forgotten and abandoned to time and season
Will there be mercy from friends who've fallen out with reason
Even the sky knows her limit, from blue to blue to blue
And even I know the difference between loving me and loving you
Still we're building defenses unlearning what we've learned
Pulling out fences, stoking fires that have burned
And you want me to walk around blind, to what is what is what
But I know there's reasons for all this pain and mistrust

Kisses aren't promises, Passion's not relief
All these things I see
Kisses they're not promises
No, love's not for sale
All these things are just as well

Times long past us now and our vision is blurred
This teeming uncertainty, that you should have heard
And this is for what, what could this possibly be
What would I do for you anyway, what would you do for me
Too much is a word , that I've often replaced
Too long have I wandered round here tinted and dazed
Please say it doesn't hurt me to feel the way I feel
I know the tragedy is your pain isn't real

But with all this said I'd rather come to the attention of the living
Forget all these times and press on with forgiving
For even the sky knows her limit from blue, to blue, to blue
I'll liken the child, that doesn't remember you

Kisses aren't promises, passion's not relief
All these things I see
Kisses they're not promises
No, love's not for sale
All these things are just as well

Mr. I'll Save You

Leave me right here
Take your eyes off me I won't bite
Leave me right here
The sun on my face I'm feeling all right

I wonder where you came from
Mr. Save You, Yes I Will
Do you always smile like that at girls that don't know you
But they look like they will
Got rock-n-roll hair and cowboy boots
You look like a city boy but I won't hold it against you

Okeechobee's a fine town
If you don't live there
It's beautiful for miles and miles around
Just nothin' round there
There's strips of trucks and too much dust
And when the sun goes down there's just never enough for you

I wonder where you came from
Mr. Save You, Yes I Will
Do you always smile like that at girls that don't know you
But they look like they will

And the Angus sits on the far side of town and
Everybody knows it's the place for getting round
They wear their shiny boots and they lose their youth
And it, makes us feel better how 'bout you

This is a fine life, at least for now
I like this town and even you somehow
Got rock-n-roll hair and cowboy boots
You look like a city boy but I won't hold it against you
Well I wonder where you came from
Mr. Save You, Yes I Will
Well I wonder where you came from
Mr. Save You, Yes I Will

Something Like That

I had a lover
Or something like that, I watched him closely
Cause I didn't want to forget
The tiny lines that crossed his brow
All the hard times passed
Well, they're just wrinkles now

I don't wanna be pretending
No that's not my style
I don't wanna be pretending
Save that sweet smile, I'm all or nothing
Yes that's me, oh shit, unfortunately
I'll be waiting, I'll be waiting...For you

Some people say there's wolves in sheeps clothing
I think your a bear
I know you're quite priestly darling
There's no angels out there
And how will the world ever spin the same
With so many lovers and so many names

I don't wanna be pretending
No that's not my style
I don't wanna be pretending
Save that sweet smile, I'm all or nothing
Yes that's me, oh shit, unfortunately
I'll be waiting, I'll be waiting...For you

There's mountains that crumble, And rivers that bleed
There's life and there's death and oh, It's all the same to me
I've chosen to be chosen, Whattaya think about that
And like the arrow sped from a bowI ain't never coming back

I don't wanna be pretending
No that's not my style
I don't wanna be pretending
Save that bitter smile, I'm all or nothing
Yes that's me, oh shit, unfortunately
I'll be waiting, I'll be waiting...For you
It could be true, Maybe it's true

Prides Crossing

A fella told me once, Don't hope for too much
It's like expectation, Expectations don't come true
I said well, hey mister I hope you don't mind too much
But I ain't listenin' to you
I'm looking for something different this time
It's called what I want and  what I need
I don't wanna have to bleed too much
To feel the blood run through me
I'm looking for Prides Crossing, Prides Crossing

I've come accustomed to My aches and my pains
I've come accustomed to far many things
I'll just drive across those tracks
The train will take me away And I won't ever be back to
Prides Crossing Prides Crossing

And he'll remember for a moment, What it meant to be alive
And he'll struggle and twist, As the whole world goes by
Too late to wonder, Too late to wonder,  Now

Cleared that truck From the railroad tracks
Took it to a junk yard, And put it in the back
Did he find what he was looking for
Like what he wants and what he needs
Did he find, Prides Crossing, Prides Crossing

Round About the Middle

Round about the middle, Quit curlin' my hair
I've lightened up my laughter
And straightened out my stare
I've got rooms full of questions
And closets of the like
But in between the nicotine, I'm still up every night

Is that you down the hallway
And swimming in my pool
Am I givin' up everything am I just a fool
Are there instincts still unanswered
And little shoes sewn up tight
I can't be the same and what a shame
And what could be more right

Is that me in the mirror, And on the avenue
Buying bundles of the distractions
Hiding from the truth
Round about the middle I feel it every day
There no takin'' back and no way out of
Where I've already laid

Round about the middle
Quit curling my hair
I've lightened up my laughter
And straightened out my stare
I've got rooms full of questions
And closets of the like
But in between the nicotine, I'm still up every night

Jeri

Jeri was a light
In a small dark sphere
She lost touch with her judgment
Round the 17th year
Escaping from the madness
And the desperate moss hung low
The 4th man's daughter
With the 3rd child's clothes

The stars became her sunrise
Nights left her undone
With cracked wooden bandages
And spirits still unsung
They say she was my mother
All I have is a name
All I can remember is this one refrain
She sang, ooh, baby don't cry now
She sang, ooh, baby don't cry

Jeri grew on up and moved out of that place
Dropping all the memories
She had long ago erased
Was she all right, was it all right
I couldn't care at all
All my family cared about
That she was white, clean and tall
She sang, ooh, baby don't cry now
She sang, ooh, baby don't cry

Tiny marked packages, bundles of pain
One shaded daughter, with so many names
They say I was her daughter
I couldn't care at all
But all we have left anyway
Are these words so small
She sang, ooh, baby don't cry now
She sang, ooh, baby don't cry

Shadow of a Woman

How did you find me here
The shadow of a wild woman
How did you know I was silently on fire
So you're here step into the moonlight
Keep prancing and praying
They'll speak to you
They say open your heart to the passion and play
Making love to the tree tops
Of lying in the dirt
On the edge of this life's skirt
By now, deeply intuitive deeply concerned
Of the ravenous path our lives may have turned
But all the dirt and all of the sod
Will not keep me from leaning on the cheek of my God
How did you find me here
The shadow of a wild woman
How did you know I was silently on fire

Holding On

Can't go running off the railway
Can't forget this much
I lost myself a week ago
You could say I'm out of touch
But I've been running with the wind
Letting leaves be my skin
Looking over where I'm going
Tryin' to recall where I've been

Now, I could let you go
But after all this time's not mine
I could stop reaching out for you
I could stop being blind
But I choose not to, I choose not to

Are you holding on
Are you holding on
Are you holding on to me
So I can hold on to you, oh please

Sitting at a red light
Wanting a cigarette
Trying not to think of things
I'm trying to forget
But once again you cross my mind
And I go out on a limb
And I go swimming into oceans
When I don't know how to swim

Now, I could let you go
But after all this time's not mine
I could stop reaching out for you
I could stop being blind
But I choose not to, I choose not to

Are you holding on . Are you holding on
Are you holding on to me
So I can, hold on to you, oh please
Holding on, are you holding on
Are you holding on to me and I will hold on to you, oh please
I will hold onto you and you will hold on to me, oh please
I will hold on to you, hold on to you, oh please
I will hold on to you, hold on to you, oh please
I will hold on to you, hold on to you, oh
I will hold on to you, hold on to you, oh please
I will hold on to you, hold on to you

Red Dirt Summer

Firefly runin' round my mason jar
Bright red rubies, pilin'  beneath the stars
Starch white linen hanging all around
All tied up before my feet hit the ground

Red dirt summer, comin’ ‘round
Red dirt summer, comin’ ‘round

Lonesome blue is the color of my walls
Bits of fabric patchwork  the halls
Creakin' floorboards,  make it known that you around

Red dirt summer, comin’ ‘round
Red dirt summer, comin’ ‘round

Sawgrass reaching for the edge of the sky
Fresh dew  dancin' on my window every night
Standing scruff pine rollin' it's way around
All spied up before my feet hit the ground

Red dirt summer, comin’ ‘round
Red dirt summer, comin’ ‘round

Cypress boarded from door to door to door
Mamma sewing , beating the kitchen floor
Hallelujah, for the southern stars that shines

Red dirt summer, rollin’ by
Red dirt summer, rollin’ by

These are the memories of youth and of my faith
The thoughts I lean on, when I come face to face
With my position on this world, thats going round’

Red dirt summer, coming round'
Red dirt summer, coming round'
Red dirt summer, coming round'
Red dirt summer, coming round'

My Linda

My  Linda she wore her smile like a crown
And she moved back to east when her world was falling down
And that was the best thing that ever happened to me

Well, she moved on in to 604, and ah, not exactly “the girl next door”
She shown with light, I’d say it was the color of gold

She said, “Oh don’t go now, but if you must go,”
I’ll take your  boys hand and watch him grow
My Linda, My Linda

Well she's not quite an angel, thank god for that
I couldn’t take any more judgment on back
She was the friend, of a friend, indeed

So I asked her, could ya’ help me out please
This illness has brought me right down to my knees
And I can’t get up for fear of life leaving me...

She said, “Oh don’t go now, but if you must go,”
I’ll take your  boys hand and watch him grow
My Linda, My Linda

Well, Times grew rough and oh so hard
Not even counting my invisible scars and
There were clouds of regret swimin' in my tea

Just then, She dropped a ruby right in my hand
She said, Go on look into it, child and you’ll understand
And I was grateful for that last memory...

She said, “Please  don’t go now, but if you must go”
I’ll take your boys hand and watch him grow

She back up my things, yes, nice and neat
She was a good friend, a good friend indeed
She saved a few trinkets of what used to be

And heard her prayer not too long after that
Holding my son’s hand, with his little black hat
And I could see they were making their own...memories

And I said, “Please  don’t go now, but if you must go”
Please take my boy’s hand and watch him grow...for me
My Linda, My Linda, My Linda, My Linda
